Hiking at the Gorge of Agali, Evia (Transfer from Athens)
Activity Description
Come and discover the hidden beauties of Evia and cross one of the most beautiful hiking gorges in Greece, the wonderful Gorge of Agali, at the foot of Dirfi! The Gorge of Agali is an excellent choice even for those who are taking their first steps in the mountains and is sure to impress you thanks to its special and rich ecosystem!
A few words about the gorge of Agali
It is one of the most beautiful gorges of Evia, which rises to the top of Dirfi, passing through many, small but remarkable habitats. Its length reaches 6 km, while the rich vegetation is typical, which includes: Aleppo pines, shrubs (holly, oregano, thyme, rosemary, etc.), hundred-old plane trees, linden, rowan, sorghum, oak, maple, maple, maple flowers. At the highest, a Kefalonian fir forest begins.
The longest part of the gorge is crossed by a stream which forms beautiful lakes and waterfalls. This stream originates from the springs Arkoudovrisi and Kriovrisi, in the gorge, which are the main sources of the river Messapi.
The name "Agali", as the locals say, comes from "agali" as in the many narrow and uphill places, the walkers are obliged to walk slowly.
Our route
We start from the village of Agios Athanasios and enter the gorge via the beautiful uphill path. We cross the metal bridges that span the river, and in the first few minutes the gorge narrows and imposing rocks rise up around us.
We arrive at the Kryovrysi spring for a refreshing break, and then the landscape transforms: the plane trees give way to pines, firs, and subalpine meadows, offering the most characteristic winter image of Dirfi.
From there, we continue to the Voidoklefta Cave, enjoying panoramic views and the wild natural beauty of the area. Our return follows the downhill route to Agios Athanasios.
